157. Notes:
158. There are different ways to transcribe the word “Unicode”, depending on
159. the language and script. In some cases there is only one language that
160. customarily uses a given script; in others there are many languages. The
161. goal here is at a minimum to collect at least one transcription for each
162. script in a language customarily written in that script, with more
163. languages if possible. If the transcription is the same for multiple
164. languages in a script, then a single representative language is used.
165. Still missing are transcriptions for the items above in RED (in at least
166. one language). I would appreciate any other transcriptions, or
167. corrections for the ones listed here. Send to mark3@macchiato.com
168. <mailto:mark3@macchiato.com>, using the directions below:
169. * *Supplying Missing Items*
170. o Most Latin-script languages will follow the spelling, and
171. change the pronunciation. For any that would not, it would
172. be good to have the alternate spelling.
173. o For non-Latin scripts the goal is to match the English
174. pronunciation — /*not*/ spelling. Above is the IPA <#IPA>
175. (in phonemic transcription) that should be matched as
176. closely as possible (without sounding affected in the target
177. language)
178. o Text would be best in either the UTF-8 text, or the code
179. points in hex HTML. E.g. either of the following:
180. + "Юникод"
181. + "Юникод"
182. + Note: for / supplementary characters/
183. <http://www.unicode.org/glossary/#supplementary_character>,
184. there should be one hex number per code point, not two
185. surrogates
186. <http://www.unicode.org/glossary/#surrogate_code_point>:
187. # 𐀀 /*not*/ &xDC00;
188. o If you have a good font, I'd also appreciate a GIF. It
189. should be *96 x 24* bits, with the text centered, in black
190. on white (plus grays if smoothed).
191. * *Other Comments*
192. o Because some browsers won't handle the text, both text and
193. GIF image are supplied. If you can’t read the text columns,
194. see Display Problems
195. <http://www.unicode.org/help/display_problems.html>.
196. o The Chinese versions (inc. Bopomofo) are translations, not
197. transcriptions, since "transcription in Chinese is pretty
198. lame" [J. Becker].
199. o There are other "translations" of Unicode that may be in
200. use, such as the Vietnamese "Thống Nhất Mã".
201. o For sample pages in different languages on the Unicode site,
202. see What is Unicode?
203. <http://www.unicode.org/unicode/standard/WhatIsUnicode.html>
204. o Americans are not generally used to IPA, and find a variety
205. of different systems in their dictionaries. This one leaves
206. the base letters as they are, and uses diacritics for
207. pronunciation.
208. * *Etymology of /Unicode/*
209. o Coined by J. Becker. Not related to previous usages, such as:
210. + A telegraphic code in which one word or set of letters
211. represents a sentence or phrase; a telegram or message
212. in this. (late 19th century, OED)
213. o According to my references, the prefix "uni" is directly
214. from Latin while the word "code" is through French.
215. o The original Indo-European apparently would have been
216. *oino-kau-do ("one strike give"): *kau apparently being
217. related to such English words as: hew, haggle, hoe, hag,
218. hay, hack, caudad, caudal, caudate, caudex, coda, codex,
219. codicil, coward, incus, and Kovač (personal name: "smith").
220. + I will leave the exact derivations to the exegetes,
221. but I like the association with "haggle" myself.
222. * *Contributions*
223. o This draws on contributions or comments from:
