  9. @chapter External libraries
  10. FFmpeg can be hooked up with a number of external libraries to add support
  11. for more formats. None of them are used by default, their use has to be
  12. explicitly requested by passing the appropriate flags to
  13. @command{./configure}.
  14. @section libxavs2
  15. FFmpeg can make use of the xavs2 library for AVS2-P2/IEEE1857.4 video encoding.
  16. Go to @url{https://github.com/pkuvcl/xavs2} and follow the instructions for
  17. installing the library. Then pass @code{--enable-libxavs2} to configure to
  18. enable it.
  19. @float NOTE
  20. libxavs2 is under the GNU Public License Version 2 or later
  21. (see @url{http://www.gnu.org/licenses/old-licenses/gpl-2.0.html} for
  22. details), you must upgrade FFmpeg's license to GPL in order to use it.
  23. @end float
  24. @section libdavs2
  25. FFmpeg can make use of the davs2 library for AVS2-P2/IEEE1857.4 video decoding.
  26. Go to @url{https://github.com/pkuvcl/davs2} and follow the instructions for
  27. installing the library. Then pass @code{--enable-libdavs2} to configure to
  28. enable it.
  29. @float NOTE
  30. libdavs2 is under the GNU Public License Version 2 or later
  31. (see @url{http://www.gnu.org/licenses/old-licenses/gpl-2.0.html} for
  32. details), you must upgrade FFmpeg's license to GPL in order to use it.
  33. @end float
  34. @section Alliance for Open Media libaom

  43. @file{./configure}.
  44. @section OpenCORE, VisualOn, and Fraunhofer libraries
  45. Spun off Google Android sources, OpenCore, VisualOn and Fraunhofer
  46. libraries provide encoders for a number of audio codecs.
  47. @float NOTE
  48. OpenCORE and VisualOn libraries are under the Apache License 2.0
  49. (see @url{http://www.apache.org/licenses/LICENSE-2.0} for details), which is
  50. incompatible to the LGPL version 2.1 and GPL version 2. You have to
  51. upgrade FFmpeg's license to LGPL version 3 (or if you have enabled
  52. GPL components, GPL version 3) by passing @code{--enable-version3} to configure in
  53. order to use it.
  54. The license of the Fraunhofer AAC library is incompatible with the GPL.
  55. Therefore, for GPL builds, you have to pass @code{--enable-nonfree} to
  56. configure in order to use it. To the best of our knowledge, it is
  57. compatible with the LGPL.
  58. @end float
  59. @subsection OpenCORE AMR

  83. Go to @url{http://www.twolame.org/} and follow the
  84. instructions for installing the library.
  85. Then pass @code{--enable-libtwolame} to configure to enable it.
  86. @section libcodec2 / codec2 general
  87. FFmpeg can make use of libcodec2 for codec2 encoding and decoding.
  88. There is currently no native decoder, so libcodec2 must be used for decoding.
  89. Go to @url{http://freedv.org/}, download "Codec 2 source archive".
  90. Build and install using CMake. Debian users can install the libcodec2-dev package instead.
  91. Once libcodec2 is installed you can pass @code{--enable-libcodec2} to configure to enable it.
  92. The easiest way to use codec2 is with .c2 files, since they contain the mode information required for decoding.
  93. To encode such a file, use a .c2 file extension and give the libcodec2 encoder the -mode option:
  94. @code{ffmpeg -i input.wav -mode 700C output.c2}.
  95. Playback is as simple as @code{ffplay output.c2}.
  96. For a list of supported modes, run @code{ffmpeg -h encoder=libcodec2}.
  97. Raw codec2 files are also supported.
  98. To make sense of them the mode in use needs to be specified as a format option:
  99. @code{ffmpeg -f codec2raw -mode 1300 -i input.raw output.wav}.
  100. @section libvpx
  101. FFmpeg can make use of the libvpx library for VP8/VP9 encoding.
  102. Go to @url{http://www.webmproject.org/} and follow the instructions for

  108. installing the library. Then pass @code{--enable-libwavpack} to configure to
  109. enable it.
  110. @section libxavs
  111. FFmpeg can make use of the libxavs library for Xavs encoding.
  112. Go to @url{http://xavs.sf.net/} and follow the instructions for
  113. installing the library. Then pass @code{--enable-libxavs} to configure to
  114. enable it.
  115. @section OpenH264
  116. FFmpeg can make use of the OpenH264 library for H.264 encoding and decoding.
  117. Go to @url{http://www.openh264.org/} and follow the instructions for
  118. installing the library. Then pass @code{--enable-libopenh264} to configure to
  119. enable it.
  120. For decoding, this library is much more limited than the built-in decoder
  121. in libavcodec; currently, this library lacks support for decoding B-frames
  122. and some other main/high profile features. (It currently only supports
  123. constrained baseline profile and CABAC.) Using it is mostly useful for
  124. testing and for taking advantage of Cisco's patent portfolio license
  125. (@url{http://www.openh264.org/BINARY_LICENSE.txt}).
  126. @section x264
  127. FFmpeg can make use of the x264 library for H.264 encoding.

  129. instructions for installing the library. Then pass @code{--enable-libx264} to
  130. configure to enable it.
  131. @float NOTE
  132. x264 is under the GNU Public License Version 2 or later
  133. (see @url{http://www.gnu.org/licenses/old-licenses/gpl-2.0.html} for
  134. details), you must upgrade FFmpeg's license to GPL in order to use it.
  135. @end float
  136. @section x265
  137. FFmpeg can make use of the x265 library for HEVC encoding.
  138. Go to @url{http://x265.org/developers.html} and follow the instructions
  139. for installing the library. Then pass @code{--enable-libx265} to configure
  140. to enable it.
  141. @float NOTE
  142. x265 is under the GNU Public License Version 2 or later
  143. (see @url{http://www.gnu.org/licenses/old-licenses/gpl-2.0.html} for
  144. details), you must upgrade FFmpeg's license to GPL in order to use it.
  145. @end float
  146. @section kvazaar
  147. FFmpeg can make use of the kvazaar library for HEVC encoding.
  148. Go to @url{https://github.com/ultravideo/kvazaar} and follow the
  149. instructions for installing the library. Then pass
  150. @code{--enable-libkvazaar} to configure to enable it.
  151. @section libilbc
  152. iLBC is a narrowband speech codec that has been made freely available
  153. by Google as part of the WebRTC project. libilbc is a packaging friendly
  154. copy of the iLBC codec. FFmpeg can make use of the libilbc library for
  155. iLBC encoding and decoding.
  156. Go to @url{https://github.com/TimothyGu/libilbc} and follow the instructions for
  157. installing the library. Then pass @code{--enable-libilbc} to configure to
  158. enable it.
  159. @section libzvbi
  160. libzvbi is a VBI decoding library which can be used by FFmpeg to decode DVB
  161. teletext pages and DVB teletext subtitles.
  162. Go to @url{http://sourceforge.net/projects/zapping/} and follow the instructions for
  163. installing the library. Then pass @code{--enable-libzvbi} to configure to
  164. enable it.
  165. @section AviSynth
  166. FFmpeg can read AviSynth scripts as input. To enable support, pass
  167. @code{--enable-avisynth} to configure. The correct headers are
  168. included in compat/avisynth/, which allows the user to enable support
  169. without needing to search for these headers themselves.
  170. For Windows, supported AviSynth variants are
  171. @url{http://avisynth.nl, AviSynth 2.6 RC1 or higher} for 32-bit builds and
  172. @url{http://avs-plus.net, AviSynth+ r1718 or higher} for 32-bit and 64-bit builds.
  173. For Linux and OS X, the supported AviSynth variant is
  174. @url{https://github.com/avxsynth/avxsynth, AvxSynth}.
  175. @float NOTE
  176. There is currently a regression in AviSynth+'s @code{capi.h} header as of
  177. October 2016, which interferes with the ability for builds of FFmpeg to use
  178. MSVC-built binaries of AviSynth. Until this is resolved, you can make sure
  179. a known good version is installed by checking out a version from before
  180. the regression occurred:
  181. @code{git clone -b MT git://github.com/AviSynth/AviSynthPlus.git @*

  185. @end float
  186. @float NOTE
  187. AviSynth and AvxSynth are loaded dynamically. Distributors can build FFmpeg
  188. with @code{--enable-avisynth}, and the binaries will work regardless of the
  189. end user having AviSynth or AvxSynth installed - they'll only need to be
  190. installed to use AviSynth scripts (obviously).
  191. @end float
  192. @section Intel QuickSync Video
  193. FFmpeg can use Intel QuickSync Video (QSV) for accelerated encoding and decoding
  194. of multiple codecs. To use QSV, FFmpeg must be linked against the @code{libmfx}
  195. dispatcher, which loads the actual decoding libraries.
  196. The dispatcher is open source and can be downloaded from
  197. @url{https://github.com/lu-zero/mfx_dispatch.git}. FFmpeg needs to be configured
  198. with the @code{--enable-libmfx} option and @code{pkg-config} needs to be able to
  199. locate the dispatcher's @code{.pc} files.
  200. @section AMD VCE
  201. FFmpeg can use the AMD Advanced Media Framework library for accelerated H.264
  202. and HEVC encoding on VCE enabled hardware under Windows.
  203. To enable support you must obtain the AMF framework header files from
  204. @url{https://github.com/GPUOpen-LibrariesAndSDKs/AMF.git}.
  205. Create an @code{AMF/} directory in the system include path.
  206. Copy the contents of @code{AMF/amf/public/include/} into that directory.
  207. Then configure FFmpeg with @code{--enable-amf}.
  208. @chapter Supported File Formats, Codecs or Features
  209. You can use the @code{-formats} and @code{-codecs} options to have an exhaustive list.
  210. @section File Formats
  211. FFmpeg supports the following file formats through the @code{libavformat}
